The best peanut butter cookies

I can picture my Aunt Eunice, head bent over her kitchen table, pouring through the Los Angeles Times. She always had a pair of scissors in one hand, ready to clip a coupon or interesting looking recipe. In her work as a beautician in the upscale salon in an LA department store, she also held scissors for over 30 years. She retired from Robinson’d May, but I can’t quite remember which she worked for before the merger.

She was the oldest of my mom’s sisters. My dad called her snooty, but her job was to know fashion and style trends. She and her husband, Uncle Howard, never had children. So, she collected fancy things, trendy recipes, and some of the attitudes of her clients.

Aunt Eunice was the one who took me to Disneyland for my 10th birthday, shocked that my parents hadn’t taken me yet. One Chistmas she gave me a box of assorted makeup and a popular watch. It was the year I started Jr. High. The next year she gave me a trendy mini dress.

But the best gift she ever gave me was the peanut butter cookie recipe she wrote out by hand. I have altered only by eliminating “margarine or” in favor of butter. I also prefer dark brown sugar.

This continues to be a family favorite. It is “our” peanut butter cookie recipe and is now used by a fourth generation to bake the best ones. Don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself.

Note: it’s been a crazy week and we are about to start the holiday season. I am planning some changes after the holidays, so look for that upcoming announcement near the end of December. In the meantime I think I’m going to write about our family food and holiday traditions.
